Alberta Energy Policy

In Alberta, the Pembina Institute's energy policy work is focused on two main areas: conventional energy and sustainable energy.

Our Energy Watch and Ecological Fiscal Reform teams lead the Pembina Institute's policy work on conventional energy that addresses the impacts of oil and gas development in Alberta.Solar Cell

Our Sustainable Communities Group leads the Pembina Institute's work on sustainable energy policy in Alberta (including energy efficiency, energy conservation and renewable energy policy issues).

Our Work

Within Alberta, the Sustainable Communities Group focuses on advancing sustainable energy policy by

  • engaging government, industry and other stakeholders in the development of provincial policies with respect to energy efficiency and conservation, and renewable energy

  • promoting ‘smart growth' policies at municipal and provincial levels with the goal of reducing environmental impacts and costs, and improving quality of life.

Clean Air Strategic Alliance

CASAThe Pembina Institute is an active member of the Clean Air Strategic Alliance (CASA) — a multi-stakeholder partnership comprising representatives selected by industry, government and non-government organizations. CASA recommends strategies to assess and improve air quality in Alberta. The Pembina Institute serves on both the "Energy Efficiency and Conservation" and "Renewable and Alternative Electricity" project teams in addition to many other CASA teams and committees.

Through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation project team, the Pembina Institute helped create a set of recommendations to guide the development of an overarching energy conservation and efficiency policy framework for Alberta. This framework will help enable the implementation of energy conservation and efficiency policies and programs at the provincial level.

Through CASA's Renewable and Alternative Electricity project team, the Pembina Institute is helping to develop a policy framework for renewable and alternative electricity development within Alberta that will be presented to the provincial government.

Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance

The Pembina Institute has been a motivating force in the creation of the new Alberta EnergyEnergy Star Logo Efficiency Alliance (AEEA). The mission of this diverse, multi-stakeholder group is to maximize energy efficiency in Alberta. The AEEA offers an inclusive and diverse forum for communication, collaborative problem solving and coordinated action between its members. It provides an informed voice on ways energy efficiency initiatives may enhance the economic and environmental success of Alberta.
