Our Vision

Communities are on the front line when it comes to building a more sustainable future — a future in which our needs are met in a manner that protects the Earth's living systems; ensures clean air, land and water; prevents dangerous climate change; and provides for a safe and just global community.

By taking actions to improve energy efficiency, increase the share of renewable resources used at the local level, and make decisions that enhance social, economic and environmental well-being, communities can help to build a more sustainable world.

That's why the Pembina Institute works directly with municipalities, Aboriginal communities, policy makers and partners in developing countries to help them identify their sustainability objectives and then take practical steps to achieve these objectives.

We help communities

  • develop a sustainable vision of their community and indicators to measure progress
  • assess current and future energy needs
  • identify opportunities and strategies for improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy resources used
  • reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants
  • develop policies and practices to enable ongoing implementation of sustainable energy initiatives.

The Pembina Institute recognizes that even the most dedicated communities may require assistance in reaching their goals. By providing technical and policy expertise, facilitating community participation and decision making processes, and helping develop practical strategies and planning frameworks, our team delivers the assistance needed to make sustainability visions a reality.
