Overcoming Barriers to Sustainable Urban Development: Toward Smart Growth in Calgary

This report presents the principles of Smart Growth as a sustainable alternative to the current pattern of sprawling, automobile dependent development in Calgary. Evidence collected from scholarly sources as well as interviews conducted with 18 leading Calgarians—representing a range of sectors including the development industry, social service agencies, the City and academia—are used to identify and assess the most significant threats posed by sprawl.
