Policy Makers

Children on wind farmFor Canada to be successful in creating a sustainable energy future, effective federal, provincial and local policies must be established to take advantage of energy efficiency and renewable energy opportunities. Both short- and long-term benefits can be realized by governments taking a leadership role in the sustainable energy transition.

Our Services

The Pembina Institute's Sustainable Communities Group is a team of policy analysts, engineers, environmental scientists and planners that is able to

  • analyze policy and program options to support renewable energy and energy efficiency
  • provide policy recommendations and model designs
  • advocate for the adoption of supportive policies and programs.

We do this through fee-for-service consulting and research projects, multi-stakeholder and consultation processes, and media and education initiatives including workshops, websites and publications.

Our Approach

In addition to working directly with municipalities, First Nations and international organizations, to evaluate the merits of particular technologies and actions, we undertake research and policy analysis that have potential applications to many different jurisdictions.

Successful Strategies for Energy Efficiency report coverWe research innovative energy policies that have been successful elsewhere and assess their potential to achieve sustainability objectives in Canadian or other international communities. Policies that have been successful in achieving non-energy goals also serve as inspiration for potential new energy policies.

We work with federal and provincial government agencies. We also partner with non-government organizations and industry associations to ground-truth any recommendations on energy policies and to develop effective approaches for informing the public on new energy policies.
